Daryl Janmaat gutted by Newcastle United defeat

Daryl Janmaat insists that Newcastle did not deserve their late defeat at home to local rivals Sunderland in the Premier League.

Newcastle United defender Daryl Janmaat has insisted that his side did not deserve to lose Sunday's Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland.

The Magpies suffered a late defeat against their bitter rivals at St James' Park as Adam Johnson's last-minute strike made the difference in the Premier League clash.

However, Janmaat believes that he and his teammates should have come away from the match with at least a share of the spoils.

"It's unbelievable because I think we were the better team, but that's football," the Dutch international told talkSPORT. "We didn't play our best today, but we didn't deserve to lose.

"It's a hard defeat. I think in the second half we were better than the first and we had some good chances, but we have to score one."

Newcastle return to Premier League action on Boxing Day when they face Manchester United at Old Trafford.
