Newcastle United have revealed that Massadio Haidara has not suffered any "significant bone or ligament damage" after a challenge from Wigan Athletic's Callum McManaman.
It was feared that the French defender would face a long time away from football after he was stretchered off following the tackle at the DW Stadium.
However, a scan has revealed that the 20-year-old has not suffered a serious injury, and that he could return next month.
A club statement read: "We are very pleased that the extent of the injury is less severe than first feared, and is limited to bruising on the bone and soft tissue damage.
"Depending on the speed of his recovery, he could be fit enough to return in early April."
Haidara joined Newcastle from Nancy during the January transfer window.
