Wesley Sneijder announces Netherlands retirement

Netherlands' most-capped player Wesley Sneijder announces his retirement from international duty with immediate effect.

Netherlands' most-capped player Wesley Sneijder has announced his retirement from international duty with immediate effect.

The 33-year-old made his Netherlands debut in 2003, and has earned 133 caps for the Dutch national team - scoring 31 times in the process.

Sniejder left Nice to join Qatari outfit Al Gharafa in the early stages of 2018, and the attacker has announced his international retirement following discussions with new Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman.

"When I left, I knew, of course, the influence that this move to Qatar could have on my career as an international," Sneijder told reporters.

"In addition, I understand that Koeman wants to make a new beginning with other, younger players. We were very open and that was a very pleasant conversation. I respect his choice."

Meanwhile, Koeman added: "Wesley is one of the best Dutch footballers from the past few years. A great player with a great look. But I want to be selecting and building a new Oranje and must therefore make choices."

Koeman was appointed head coach of the Dutch national team last month.
