Former Cardiff City manager Neil Warnock has urged Manchester United to abandon a move for Shanghai Shenhua forward Odion Ighalo.

The Red Devils are believed to be in talks over a potential loan deal for the 30-year-old, who is allegedly confident of becoming a United player before the January transfer window closes for business.

However, Warnock has claimed that Ighalo's lack of consistency and age means that he is the wrong player for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, who are desperately attempting to sign a new forward.

"I tried to sign Ighalo when I was at Cardiff. His salary was over six figures a week, £100,000, something like that. His agent tells you one thing, then the other," Warnock told Sky Sports News.

"Manchester United won't have that problem with the terms. I'm not sure it's the right player for United. He's not consistent and isn't the right type of player. They want young players. Why didn't they go for Danny Ings - someone similar to Marcus Rashford. It's desperation."

Ighalo, who has played in the Premier League for Watford, has scored 10 times in 19 appearances for Shanghai Shenhua since joining the Chinese Super League club in February 2019.
