Liverpool and Manchester United, who are due to face each other in the Europa League at Anfield this evening, may also be involved in a battle off the pitch in the summer.
According to Bild both clubs have shown an interest in FC Koln goalkeeper Timo Horn.
Matthias Hamann, who acts as Liverpool's scout in Germany, was pictured in the stands as Horn featured between the posts against Schalke 04 at the weekend.
There have been suggestions that manager Jurgen Klopp is keen to add some competition for the gloves at Anfield, where Simon Mignolet is the current number one.
However, it is believed that as doubts remain over David de Gea's long-term future, United are also in the running for the 22-year-old.
Germany Under-21 international Horn is thought to have a release clause worth around £7m in his Koln contract.
