Manchester United have seemingly been handed a clearer path to sign Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee.
While the Red Devils are yet to make a senior addition during the summer transfer window, reports persist that they are on the brink of acquiring at least one fresh face.
Over the weekend, it was claimed that Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt was closing in on a move to Old Trafford, the deal on ice until after Netherlands have finished participating at Euro 2024.
However, there also been much talk regarding the future of Zirkzee, who recently helped Bologna qualify for the Champions League for the first time in their history.
A total of 11 goals and four assists came from his 34 appearances in Serie A as Bologna earned a top-five finish, yet his performances only increased interest in his signature.

Milan give up on Zirkzee pursuit
At one stage, it appeared that AC Milan were the clear frontrunners for the 23-year-old as they were willing to meet his alleged £34m release clause.
Instead, disagreements over agent fees have held up negotiations, subsequently allowing Man United to overtake them in the race for his signature.
As per advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Milan have officially withdrawn from the race to sign Zirkzee, with the legendary Swede saying they 'have another player in mind'.
Speaking at the unveiling of new boss head coach Paulo Fonseca, Ibrahimovic said: "He's the past. As Paulo said, we have a player in mind, I won't say his name. There is somebody, let's see."
Fonseca had previously stated: "We know which player we want. We are waiting to have him here shortly."

Major boost for Ten Hag
Who Milan have in mind remains to be seen. A report in Corriere dello Sport says that Alvaro Morata is on their radar, but the Spaniard has already pledged his allegiance to Atletico Madrid for another season.
From United's perspective, though, it represents a huge plus for Erik ten Hag who is eager to find competition for Rasmus Hojlund.
Although United could end up paying close to £80m for the two Dutchmen, they would represent strong options at both ends of the pitch.
Like with De Ligt, Zirkzee is currently with Netherlands at Euro 2024, preparing for a semi-final showdown with England on Wednesday night.
