Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho denies that he told the club's board not to sign Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has denied suggestions that he told the club's board not to sign Cristiano Ronaldo during the summer transfer window.

Ronaldo scored 450 goals in 438 appearances for Real Madrid before leaving for Juventus in a £90m deal last month.

The Portugal international was continually linked with a return to United during his time at the Bernabeu, having made his name at Old Trafford following a move from Sporting Lisbon.

Ronaldo netted 118 times for the Red Devils during his six seasons with the club, and is still fondly remembered by the supporters.

Over the weekend, it was reported that Mourinho had told the club's board not to move for Ronaldo during the summer window, but the United boss has insisted that the offer of the forward 'was never on the table'.

"Cristiano was never on my table to say yes or no," Mourinho told reporters. "Cristiano to come to us, it was never on my table."

United returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a 2-0 success away to Burnley on Sunday afternoon.
