Liverpool transfer news: 'Negotiations held' for Premier League defender

Euro 2024 to Anfield? Liverpool 'in negotiations' to sign PL defender

Liverpool are reportedly in negotiations with a Premier League team to sign a defender who has just starred at Euro 2024.

Liverpool have reportedly held negotiations with Crystal Palace regarding the potential transfer of Marc Guehi.

The Merseyside giants, now with Arne Slot at the helm, are yet to make any major additions to their squad, instead only seeing several players depart Anfield on a free transfer.

Meanwhile, the futures of three star men in Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah remain up in the air, despite the recent insistence that the trio will likely start the season at the club.

However, there is an inevitability about Liverpool eventually making a number of signings, particularly in defence when Joel Matip has seen his long-term association with the club come to an end.

A recent report has indicated that Liverpool and Slot had 'an ideal centre-back target' in mind and are currently pursuing that deal.

Nevertheless, it appears that another player, one who played a far more active role at Euro 2024, is also very much on Liverpool's radar.

Liverpool speaking to Palace over Guehi

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, officials at the Reds are holding discussions with their Palace counterparts in an effort to conclude a deal.

The 24-year-old has just made six starts for England at Euro 2024, helping the Three Lions to the final before they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Spain on Sunday night.

Speaking to his Playback Live show, Romano said: "I can tell you that Liverpool are negotiating for Marc Guehi, because at the moment, the situation is quiet around him. Obviously there is the Euros, so after the Euros, we will see the appreciation of Liverpool for the player.

"I can confirm to you, but not only Liverpool - there are also other clubs, for example Arsenal and many others who appreciate the player. But in terms of the bid, in terms of the negotiations, it is a different story."

Can Liverpool win the race?

The fact that Liverpool are seemingly attempting to be proactive in the race for Guehi can only be a positive, while Palace will also want to determine as soon as possible whether their most prized asset is remaining in Oliver Glasner's squad.

Everything could come down to money, though. Liverpool would need to part with at least £60m to get a deal for Guehi over the line, and they have only paid that amount on three occasions in their history.

Needs must, however, with only Van Dijk, Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez viewed as senior central-defensive options for the time being. Sepp van den Berg is currently back in the fold, but it is yet to be determined whether the Dutchman will be given an opportunity to impress.

From Guehi's perspective, he is more likely to be viewed as a first-choice pick at Liverpool than he is at Arsenal, while Manchester United have seemingly moved on from their initial interest.
