Brendan Rodgers believes that Liverpool were "outstanding" against Manchester United despite their 2-1 defeat.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has described his players' performance against Manchester United at Anfield as "outstanding".

The Reds went down 2-1 at home in their Premier League fixture on Sunday after being reduced to 10 men following the dismissal of midfielder Jonjo Shelvey before the break.

"I'm bitterly disappointed with the result - I thought the best team lost," said Rodgers. "What we could control, I thought the players and the performance level was outstanding.

"What you can't control is decisions by the referee. We're bitterly disappointed it didn't go our way today, but performance-wise I thought the players were outstanding.

"We dominated the majority of the game, even with 10 men, but it didn't go our way."

Liverpool are still searching for their first Premier League win of the season after five games.
