Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has declared himself pleased with the showings of Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic on their competitive debuts for the club.
Lukaku's strike just after the hour mark proved nothing more than a consolation in the end, as goals from Casemiro and Isco earned Real Madrid a 2-1 win over the Red Devils in Tuesday night's UEFA Super Cup clash.
The Belgium international had earlier missed from just a few yards out with the goal gaping, but Mourinho was pleased with the way his £75m summer signing responded.
"He tried, and of course he missed his chance with an open goal but he scored his goal," he told reporters. "He had a good fight against two good central defenders and I'm happy with his period and I'm happy with the way he fits into - I'm not tired to repeat - an amazing group."
Matic perhaps could have done better to prevent Casemiro from scoring, meanwhile, while also being slightly caught out for the second, though Mourinho was again quick to talk up another of his new recruits.
"I think he played really well, I think in the moment they were moving the ball well. Of course was difficult for us in the midfield," he added. "But you know in our good moment he was really good, especially in our period of dominance in the second half after the 2-0.
"He was what we wanted him to be, to move the ball in a simple way to give balance to the team to start building from the back and he's a player with great experience, many years at the highest level and good experience good stability."
Lukaku and Matic both played the full 90 minutes in Skopje, as did fellow big-name signing Victor Lindelof in the heart of defence.
