Manchester United 'alerted to Marc Overmars, Edwin van der Sar availability'

Ajax director of football Marc Overmars hints that he and Edwin van der Sar are looking to move on from Ajax in the near future, reportedly putting Man Utd on red alert.

Manchester United could reportedly try to tempt Ajax chiefs Marc Overmars and Edwin van der Sar to the club after the former hinted that their time in the Netherlands could be coming to an end.

The Red Devils saw their transfer strategy come under heavy criticism over the summer as United were unsuccessful in their attempts to land Jadon Sancho, with the 20-time English champions also failing to bring in a centre-back in the most recent window.

Overmars currently serves as Ajax's director of football while Van der Sar is the Eredivisie giants' chief executive, and United could potentially be on red alert after Overmars claimed that he and his fellow Dutchman could seek out a new challenge in the near future.

"When I was appointed in this job at Ajax I knew I only wanted to stay for three or four years maximum," Overmars said in quotes attributed to The Mirror. "I have been here eight seasons now! For me – but just as much for Edwin – it is sure that we are not going to carry on here until we are 60.

"This job at Ajax is costing too much energy. The whole of the Netherlands is constantly on my back and has an opinion about us. The job has brought a lot of great things too. Edwin and I are proud that we have brought Ajax back where it should be in Europe."

Van der Sar made 266 appearances for Man United between 2005 and 2011, winning four Premier League titles and one Champions League crown at Old Trafford.
