Romelu Lukaku bemoans slow Manchester United starts

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku admits that his side need to improve their first-half performances after being forced to come from behind in their last two games.

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku has admitted that his side need to start matches better, having been forced to come from behind in their last two games.

Jose Mourinho's side found themselves two goals down inside 10 minutes against Newcastle United in their most recent home outing, rescuing victory from that match courtesy of a three-goal comeback in the final 20 minutes.

The Red Devils were once again trailing at the interval against Chelsea on Saturday before turning things around in the second half, and Lukaku is at a loss to explain why his side are taking so long to get going.

"We have a plan every time we go against a team, but I don't know how to explain it. It's just something we need to get out of. Offensively we are set up really well, but then it's on the ball where we need to make a difference," the Belgian told reporters.

"In the first half [against Chelsea] we started slowly - no initiative on the ball, no movement. In the second half, everything that we said we wanted to do in the first half we did. That's why we came back and got great results. Now the key is to start games like we do in the second half.

"It's going to take time to be where we want to be, but the last two games have shown that we can play, we can press forward and we have played to make a difference. The work that we're doing behind the scenes has to be delivered into wins."

United have won just one of their last six matches in all competitions ahead of this evening's Champions League clash with Juventus.
