Manchester United's Chris Smalling 'disappointed' by Champions League exit

Chris Smalling admits that he is 'disappointed' by how Manchester United were knocked out of the Champions League in their quarter-final defeat to Bayern Munich.

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has expressed his 'disappointment' at how his side were booted out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage by Bayern Munich.

The Red Devils managed to cope with the German outfit's attacking threat and eventually found a goal of their own courtesy of a strike from Patrice Evra.

However, within a minute, Pep Guardiola's side equalised through Mario Mandzukic and went on to secure a 3-1 victory at the Allianz Arena.

"It was disappointing," Smalling told MUTV. "For large parts of the game we dealt with all of the crosses and to concede so soon after scoring, from a cross, having defended so well as a team, was really disappointing. It gave them the initiative going forward after that.

"If we could have just seen it out for five or 10 minutes and let the game settle down they would have been chasing it."

United are unlikely to compete in next season's Champions League campaign as they are currently seven points adrift of fourth in the Premier League with five games left to play.
