Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson expressed his delight at the reception the returning Darren Fletcher received in the win over Galatasaray.
The Scotland international made his comeback after 11 months out of the game with illness during the club's 1-0 victory over the Turkish giants.
Fletcher has an inflammatory bowel condition and took time off from the game late last year, however Ferguson was thrilled with the ovation the fans gave the 28-year-old.
"The fans recognised what a tough time Darren has had. It was a mark of respect that they gave him a marvellous ovation," said Ferguson.
"Of course, being out of the game for a year it took him quite a few minutes to really get going.
"He did one or two good things but he can only get better after this."
Fletcher has 58 caps for Scotland.
