Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola donates €1m to coronavirus fight

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola donates €1m to a campaign fighting against the coronavirus outbreak.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has donated €1m (£0.92m) to the fight against coronavirus.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused sporting events across the globe to be postponed indefinitely, with the 2020 Tokyo Olympics confirmed to have been pushed back by a year on Tuesday.

Guardiola's native Spain has confirmed over 40,000 cases of coronavirus, and he has donated the funds to a campaign led by the Barcelona Medical College and the Fundacio Angel Soler Daniel.

A statement by the college read: "Pep Guardiola participates in the donation campaign of the Collegi de Metges de Barcelona and the Fundacio Angel Soler Daniel with a financial contribution of €1m for the acquisition of sanitary material during the COVID-19 emergency.

"The campaign has as its objective the collection of medical material and economic contributions from collegiate physicians and the population in general for the purchase of material and sanitary equipment that is currently lacking in the health centres of Catalonia."

The Premier League is currently suspended until April 30 at the earliest amid the pandemic.
