Liverpool 'to lodge bid for Christian Benteke after FA Cup final'

Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke is reportedly Liverpool's number one summer transfer target.

Liverpool have reportedly stepped up their interest in Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke.

The Reds will make a firm offer for the Belgium international shortly after the Villans' FA Cup final clash with Arsenal on May 30, according to The Mirror.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is said to have been told to press ahead with his summer recruitment plans, despite lingering uncertainty about his future.

Rodgers is reportedly aiming to bring in five or more new players this summer, with at least seven squad members expected to be offloaded.

Among those linked with the Anfield exit are Fabio Borini, Jose Enrique, Glen Johnson, Brad Jones, Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Javier Manquillo.

Liverpool's interest in Benteke stretches back to last summer, with Rodgers thought to have considered moving in for the Belgian after failing to secure the services of Loic Remy from Queens Park Rangers.
