Liverpool have reportedly made an approach to Inter Milan for midfielder Mateo Kovacic.
The Reds are preparing to bid farewell to talismanic captain Steven Gerrard, who has urged the club's owners, Fenway Sports Group, to invest in the playing squad.
According to The Mirror, the Merseyside club have earmarked Kovacic as a possible replacement for the ex-England international, in terms of providing goals from midfield.
Brendan Rodgers is also considering a move for Manchester City's James Milner as he looks to take Liverpool back into the Champions League next season.
Meanwhile, Fabio Borini is expected to leave Anfield, with Lazio keen on signing the former Roma striker if Le Aquile finish in the top three in Serie A.
