Leon Osman: 'We can still match Liverpool despite their transfer spending'

Everton midfielder Leon Osman insists that the Toffees can still match Liverpool despite the Anfield club's heavy outlay on transfers this summer.

Everton midfielder Leon Osman has insisted that the Toffees still feel that they can match rivals Liverpool despite the Anfield club's transfer activity this summer.

The Reds have already spent sizeable amounts on fees and contracts for the likes of Roberto Firmino and James Milner, while the club are also thought to be close to sealing the £32m capture of Aston Villa forward Christian Benteke.

"Are we still confident of matching Liverpool? Absolutely," said Osman, according to the Daily Star.

"In the last four seasons we have finished above them twice and that is our aim every year. It is not the priority but there's good competition within the city.

"It doesn't worry us Liverpool have spent fortunes. We have our pride, our self-belief. We will not be looking at where we finish until the end but come the end of the season if we're above them, we'll be pleased."

Everton have so far landed Tom Cleverley and Gerard Deulofeu during the current window.
