Liverpool defender Joel Matip: "We have to stop the mistakes"

Liverpool defender Joel Matip insists that any talk of his side challenging for the Premier League title can be forgotten about for now following another heavy defeat.

Joel Matip has admitted that Liverpool can forget about challenging at the top end of the Premier League until they "stop the mistakes" at the back.

The Reds shipped four more goals on Sunday afternoon as they suffered a heavy 4-1 loss against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium.

Defeat for Liverpool leaves them ninth in the table and 12 points adrift of leaders Manchester City, which Matip suggests is already too big a gap for his side - with one league win in six outings - to make up on current form.

"We gave them the opportunities - it was not like they played the perfect balls. We gave them the opportunities - we have to stop the mistakes," he told Sky Sports News.

"Most teams at home with the stand in their back are always stronger. [Away from home] I am a defender and I should take care of this. We don't think about the title race at the moment; we only try to get back in a good mood for next week."

Liverpool have conceded 16 goals in the league this season - their worst defensive record after nine top-flight games since 1964-65 - with 15 of those coming on their travels.
