Top five Derby della Capitale matches

Sports Mole looks back on five of the most memorable Rome derbies ahead of Lazio vs. Roma tomorrow afternoon.

Tomorrow afternoon pride will be at stake in the Italian capital as Lazio and Roma contest the Derby della Capitale at the Stadio Olimpico.

Having met on 173 previous occasions, it's Roma that edge the head-to-head battle, having won 64 times to Lazio's 48.

So, ahead of the 174th meeting between the rivals, Sports Mole has picked out five of the most memorable matches in recent times.

Lazio 3-3 Roma, November 1998
Roma went into this clash having not won any of their last nine encounters against their neighbours. While they did not break that sequence on this occasion, they will have felt like victors come the final whistle. Marco Delvecchio put Roma in front, but a brace from Roberto Mancini and a penalty from Marcelo Salas looked to have sealed all three points for Lazio. Roma's Fabio Petruzzi was then red carded, but despite that numerical advantage, Eusebio Di Francesco and Francesco Totti's first ever goal in the fixture in the closing stages secured a draw.

Roma 2-2 Lazio, April 2001
Goals early in the second half from Gabriel Batistuta and Delvecchio were just reward for Roma, who dominated large parts of this contest. They failed to see the game out, though, as Pavel Nedved reduced the arrears with a strike from distance in the 78th minute. Then, just as it appeared that Roma had held out, Lazio's Argentine midfielder Lucas Castroman saw a low effort creep inside the near post deep into stoppage time.

Lazio 1-5 Roma, March 2002
No player had previously scored four times in this game, but Vincenzo Montella did just that as Fabio Capello's Roma romped to victory. L'Aeroplanino struck a first-half hat-trick, before adding one more after the break to accompany a goal from his teammate Totti. Lazio's consolation was scored by Serbian midfielder Dejan Stankovic.

Lazio 3-2 Roma, March 2008
Earlier during the 2007-08 campaign, Lazio had lost by the odd goal in five to their rivals. This time around, though, they gained revenge by recording a victory by the same scoreline. Rodrigo Taddei gave Roma the lead, but that was eradicated by Lazio duo Goran Pandev and Tommaso Rocchi. Midfielder Simone Perrotta drew the Romans level in the 62nd minute, but Valon Behrami would be the hero as he scored the winning goal in the second minute of stoppage time.

Lazio 4-2 Roma, April 2009
A hectic start to proceedings saw Pandev and Mauro Zarate score for Lazio, while Philippe Mexes got his name among the scorers, all within the opening 10 minutes. Stephan Lichtsteiner extended Lazio's advantage just before the hour mark, but once again the arrears were reduced by Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi. The points were sealed for the Sky Blues six minutes from time by now-Manchester City full-back Aleksandar Kolarov.
