Japan manager Alberto Zaccheroni has resigned from his post in the wake of the Asian champions' first-round exit at the World Cup, it has been reported.

The Italian coach, who took over from Takeshi Okada in 2010, announced the decision earlier today, according to The AP.

Zaccheroni, who previously said that he would take some time to consider his future with the Blue Samurai, saw his team finish bottom of Group C with a solitary point.

The 61-year-old managed a host of teams, including Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan, prior to his appointment to the Japan post.
