Huddersfield Town halt Brentford run

Huddersfield Town hold on to secure a 2-1 home victory against Brentford in the Championship.

Huddersfield Town have ended Brentford's four-game winning run with a 2-1 victory at the John Smith's Stadium this afternoon.

Brentford began on the front foot as Alan Judge smashed a long-range effort narrowly over the bar in the fifth minute, and the winger went close once more just a few minutes later.

Huddersfield looked to counter when they got the ball and Nakhi Wells flashed an effort into the side-netting with the home side's first shot of the afternoon.

Brentford continued to pour forward though, and Jonathan Douglas nodded wide before Alex Smithies denied the positive Judge with a reaction save.

For all Brentford's early chances, Huddersfield took the lead in the 18th minute as Sean Scannell fired home from Wells's low cross.

Smithies then thwarted Jake Bidwell before Jacob Butterfield twice went close at the other end.

Shortly before the interval Alex Pritchard fired two efforts narrowly wide as Brentford continued to look for an equaliser, but they fell 2-0 behind just four minutes into the second half as Bidwell deflected Jack Robinson's cross into his own net.

Wells should have then made it 3-0, but the striker headed straight into the grateful arms of David Button.

Mark Warburton threw on Stuart Dallas as he looked for a way back into the game, and the winger came within a whisker of reducing the deficit seconds after his introduction with a snapshot that flashed just wide.

Wells then wasted another good chance and moments later Douglas made it 2-1 with a good finish from a flowing move to give Brentford belief going into the final 20 minutes.

Button denied Wells once more with 10 minutes to go and Brentford poured forward in search of a late equaliser, but two fine saves from Smithies to deny Judge and then Tommy Smith saw the home side hold on to secure an impressive victory.
