Hibernian defeat Scottish Championship leaders Rangers

Paul Hanlon's second-half header secures a 2-1 win for Hibernian and inflicts a first league defeat of the season for Scottish Championship leaders Rangers.

Hibernian have held on to beat Scottish Championship leaders Rangers 2-1 in the top-of-the-table clash at Easter Road.

The Gers came into the match having won all 11 of their league matches so far this season and sat eight points clear of Hibs at the summit, and they had the first chance of the match when Lee Wallace flashed a drive narrowly wide of the post, but minutes later they found themselves behind.

Hibs' top scorer Jason Cummings was found on the right flank and he cut inside and curled a fine finish past Wes Foderingham for his 11th goal of the season to hand his side the lead after just 14 minutes.

The opener lifted an already enthusiastic home crowd and Liam Henderson fired wide from a similar position as the hosts came forward again, before Dominique Malonga danced his way into the penalty area and found David Gray, whose effort was too weak to beat Foderingham.

Rangers gradually found a foothold in the game and after Jason Holt had a shot blocked, home goalkeeper Mark Oxley saved well from James Tavernier when the right-back was found by Nicky Clark's low cross.

It took Mark Warburton's side just two minutes to level as Hibs conceded in unfortunate fashion when Wallace was given too much time to take a shot, and his effort deflected off Darren McGregor past Oxley.

Marvin Bartley's low effort just fell the wrong side of the post as the visitors looked to take advantage of that stroke of fortune, and they came within inches of completing the turnaround when Oxley saved Martyn Waghorn's effort and Wallace's follow-up was deflected onto the crossbar by McGregor.

Cummings should have restored Hibs' lead when he was put through by John McGinn's fine pass but the forward was denied well by Foderingham, before Nathan Oduwa bent a shot onto the post as the game opened up even further.

It was the home side who found the all-important third goal after McGinn's free kick had been tipped over by Foderingham, as the midfielder's corner was missed by the goalkeeper and Paul Hanlon was on hand to head home.

Waghorn lashed an effort over the bar as Rangers briefly threatened a second equaliser, but the game became disjointed in the final stages and Hibs held on to inflict a first league defeat of the season on their opposition and cut the gap at the top of the table to five points.
