Imrie hopes history will repeat itself at Ibrox

Hamilton are third from bottom of the Ladbrokes Premiership standings.

Dougie Imrie is hoping for a repeat of history when Hamilton visit Rangers on Sunday.

Accies’ 2-0 win over the Light Blues at Ibrox over a year ago was their first Ladbrokes Premiership victory in Govan since 1926.

With Hamilton sitting third from bottom of the table, four points ahead of Dundee and St Mirren, the Accies attacker would like nothing more than what would be another shock result even though Steven Gerrard’s side exited the Europa League on Thursday night with a defeat against Rapid Vienna to take them to three games without a win.

The 35-year-old told Press Association Sport: “It would be good because we need the  points.

“We were excellent there last season all over the park and we were very unlucky here this season.

“I know the game finished 4-1 but that wasn’t a true reflection of the game, we matched them for 81 minutes and the game changed when they got the penalty which wasn’t a penalty.

“But if we can emulate the performance at their place last season and the 81 minutes against them here we have a right good chance of getting something from the game.

“We kept it 0-0 to half-time, came out in the second half and got a goal after six minutes and straight away the fans were on top of them because they are expecting to win and then we got them on a counter-attack and win the game 2-0.

“You have to ride your luck in those games as well. They had some unbelievable chances that they didn’t take.

“That’s how you win games. When they are not on fire, you have to take your chances when they come along.”

Boss Martin Canning expects to have Gary Woods back fully fit with fellow goalkeeper Jan Mucha in with a chance of the trip to Ibrox after both were injured in last week’s home defeat to Hibernian.

When Mucha pulled up during the warm-up, Woods was elevated from the bench to a starting place.

Jacob Marsden went from not being in the squad to a place among the substitutes and he came on to make his debut when Woods picked up a knee injury.

Canning, who has midfielder Scott Martin suspended, told Press Association Sport: “Woodsy is back and training today. We will wait and see how Jan is for the weekend.

“I always felt Woodsy would be fine. Jacob did very well on Saturday so I have no concerns with him. Whichever one we play, they are capable of doing the job.”
