On this day: David Moyes continues winning start at Everton

Thirteen years ago today, David Moyes continued his winning start as manager of Everton away at Derby County.

Last weekend, this column told how David Moyes claimed a victory from his first match in charge of Everton.

It was a maiden win for the Toffees in seven outings, yet having had to wait for over two months to claim three points, they would go on to achieve that twice in the space of a week under Moyes's guidance 13 years ago today.

The Merseysiders made the trip to Pride Park to face a Derby County team that, like them, were fighting at the wrong end of the table for Premier League survival.

The Rams, who had lost just one of their previous four outings, occupied 19th spot and were four points worse off than their visitors.

Yet, despite being in relatively positive form, they were unable to cope with a revitalised Everton for large parts of the game.

In 14 away matches, Everton had scored just nine goals. However, as the encounter moved into the 55th minute, they had opened up a three-goal advantage.

David Unsworth, who scored the first goal of Moyes's tenure, broke the deadlock in the first half with a strike from distance, before a quickfire double from Alan Stubbs and Swedish midfielder Niclas Alexandersson put the away team in command.

Substitute Branko Strupar had only been on the pitch for 60 seconds when he pulled a goal back for Derby in the 56th minute, but the encounter appeared to be over when Duncan Ferguson made it 4-1 with a rasping drive into the top corner of the net.

There was a fightback from Derby, though, as Lee Morris and a diving header from Strupar brought them to within a goal of claiming a share of the spoils, but it was a case of too little too late as Everton held out to record what was only their second away win of the campaign.

Speaking after the final whistle, Moyes said: "The players have not had too many Saturday nights where they can remember winning and now they have had two on the trot where they can feel good about themselves."

Meanwhile, Derby boss John Gregory added: "With the pressure on the old habits started to appear again."
