Former Everton manager Rafael Benitez issues an apology to the fans following his recent sacking after being defeated by Norwich City.

After being sacked by Everton, Rafael Benitez has apologised to the fans.

The 61-year-old was let go by the club after their most recent defeat against Norwich City at the weekend, bringing an end to his time with the Toffees after less than seven months in charge.

After taking time to reflect, the Spaniard has issued a statement on his website to the Everton fans, analysing his time with the club, pointing out the lack of finances and injuries.

"My love for this city, for Merseyside and its people, made me accept this challenge, but it is only when you are inside that you realise the magnitude of the task.

"From the very first day, my staff and myself worked as we always do, with commitment and full dedication, we didn't only have to get results, but we also had to win over people's hearts. However, the financial situation and then the injuries that followed made things even harder.

"I am convinced that we would have been better once the injured players were back and with the arrival of the new signings."

Everton are now searching for a new manager, with former boss Roberto Martinez being linked with a return.
