Result: England 1-0 Spain

A header from Frank Lampard was enough for England to record victory over world and European champions Spain at Wembley this evening.

Stand-in captain Frank Lampard scored the only goal of the game as England defeated world and European champions Spain at Wembley this evening.

Vicente Del Bosque's Spain controlled the possession throughout the encounter, but they were unable to breach Joe Hart's net.

The first chance of the match fell to Lampard, but the Chelsea midfielder shot straight at Iker Casillas from 25 yards out.

In reply Sergio Busquests volleyed over the bar from close range following a cross by Xabi Alonso after 36 minutes.

The deadlock was eventually broken three minutes after the restart. Darren Bent headed James Milner's free-kick against the post but Lampard was on hand to head in the rebound from two yards out.

With 55 minutes played David Villa rounded Hart, but with the angle narrowing, he struck into the side netting.

The same player then struck the post with a volleyed effort after 72 minutes which had Hart scampering across his line.

With time running, former Arsenal midfielder spurned a good chance to draw Spain level, but he sent his effort wide of the upright from eight yards out.

England had not defeated a World Cup holder since 1980, when they faced Argentina.
