England interim manager Lee Carsley reportedly receives a boost to his hopes of landing the role on a permanent basis.

England's interim boss Lee Carsley has reportedly received a huge boost to his hopes of securing the position on a full-time basis.

The Football Association are currently looking for a permanent manager after Gareth Southgate left his position following Euro 2024.

Southgate led the Three Lions to back-to-back European Championship finals as well as taking his country to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals.

However, he was unable to deliver a major trophy and ultimately decided it was time to leave after England's defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

The FA opted to place England's Under-21 manager, Carsley, in interim charge for the six group matches of the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League.

Carsley receives boosts to hopes of becoming England's manager

Carsley made a positive start to his tenure, overseeing consecutive 2-0 victories over the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

Despite Carsley's encouraging start, a number of high-profile names continue to be linked with the England job, including Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel.

However, according to Sky Sports News, the FA has made no contact with Klopp and Tuchel despite the pair being out of work following their departures from Liverpool and Bayern Munich at the end of last season.

The report also claims that the FA has not held any discussions with former Chelsea boss Graham Potter and current Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

While the situation could change, the latest update appears to leave Carsley well-placed to become England's next permanent manager.

Would Carsley be a shrewd appointment?

Carsley may not be an eye-catching candidate like Klopp or Tuchel, but appointing him on a permanent basis would make plenty of success.

The former Republic of Ireland international already has significant knowledge of England's young stars from his time working with the Under-21s.

Carsley should also offer an exciting brand of football which is something that Southgate failed to offer during his time in charge.

The 50-year-old proved during last year's successful Under-21 European Championship that he can get a team to play an attractive style while also getting positive results.

Perhaps, the biggest question is whether Carsley could handle the pressure and the outside noise that comes from being England manager, especially as he has admitted that he finds it uncomfortable being in the spotlight.
