England's top five wins over Switzerland

Sports Mole picks out five of England's most memorable victories over tonight's opponents Switzerland.

England return to competitive action tonight for the first time since their winless World Cup campaign in Brazil.

Switzerland will be the opponents to Roy Hodgson's side in Basel, with the match marking the first for both nations in Group E of qualification for the European Championships in 2016.

The two countries have met 22 times before, with the Three Lions winning 14 of those. Here, Sports Mole has picked out five of the most memorable victories for England.

1. England 6-0 Switzerland, 1948

England had met their Swiss counterparts on three previous occasions, losing two of them. However, at Highbury, they restored parity as far as the head to head record was concerned with a resounding victory. Jack Haines and Johnny Hancocks helped themselves to two goals apiece, while Jack Rowley and Jackie Milburn also weighed in with a goal each.

2. Switzerland 1-8 England, 1963

Alf Ramsey's side had scored 14 goals in their past four meetings with Switzerland and they would go on to pass the 20-mark in Basel. Bobby Charlton scored four hat-tricks during his international career, with this one being the last of them. Johnny Byrne netted a brace, with further goals coming courtesy of Bryan Douglas, Jimmy Melia and Tony Kay.

3. Switzerland 2-3 England, 1971

These two teams were battling it out for a place at Euro 1972, with this result proving to be crucial. First-half strikes from Geoff Hurst and Martin Chivers were cancelled out by Daniel Jeandupeux and Fritz Kunzli, but the home side could not muster a response after Anton Weibel put through his own net with 12 minutes left to play.

4. England 3-0 Switzerland, 2004

The performance of a teenage Wayne Rooney may have lit up England's opening Euro 2004 encounter against France, but two late goals from Zinedine Zidane meant that the encounter ended in defeat. The Everton youngster would continue that form, though, against the Swiss by scoring either side of the break, before Steven Gerrard added gloss to the scoreline.

5. Switzerland 1-3 England, 2010

Rooney was again the centre of attention as England headed to Basel for a Euro 2012 qualifier. There had been numerous allegations surrounding his private life in the newspapers, but Fabio Capello decided to play the Manchester United frontman and he responded by breaking the deadlock in the 10th minute. Adam Johnson doubled the lead and despite Xherdan Shaqiri reducing the arrears, Darren Bent sealed the victory in the 88th minute.
