Roberto Martinez disappointed with John Terry

Everton boss Roberto Martinez slams Chelsea captain John Terry for involving himself in John Stones's transfer saga.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has hit out at Chelsea captain John Terry for publicly backing the Blues' reported pursuit of Toffees defender John Stones.

Terry incurred the wrath of the Spanish manager by intimating that the 21-year-old would be the ideal man to replace him at Stamford Bridge in the coming years.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has reportedly seen two bids of £20m and £25m already knocked back, with the Premier League champions said to be readying a third offer.

"That was wrong," Martinez told reporters of Terry's comments. "You know that is illegal, the rule doesn't allow you to comment on players that are registered at other clubs in that open manner.

"That is disappointing. We have a fantastic relationship between the two clubs. In the past, we made our biggest investment in Chelsea [when we bought Romelu Lukaku].

"We all know there are rules and regulations and it is something we don't want to see when other clubs speak about your players. It is wrong and it shouldn't happen."

Stones is contracted to the Merseyside club until 2019.
