West Ham United moved up to second place in the Premier League by claiming a 2-1 victory over 10-man Chelsea.

Mauro Zarate fired the Hammers into the lead, before Nemanja Matic was sent off for the visitors at the end of the first half.

After the break, Gary Cahill smashed in an equaliser for the Blues after a corner had not been cleared.

However, with 11 minutes remaining substitute Andy Carroll headed in from Aaron Cresswell's cross to seal the points for Slaven Bilic's side.

WEST HAM

Goal

Adrian: Although Chelsea only managed four attempts on target, the keeper commanded his area well and made an important stop from a Willian free kick in the first half and close-range Ramires effort just before his team scored their second goal. (7/10)

Defence

Carl Jenkinson: Produced a solid performance at right-back and kept Hazard quiet down his side of the pitch throughout the afternoon. (7/10)

James Tomkins: Won a number of challenges in their air during the match and ensured that Costa was never given a clear goalscoring chance. (7/10)

James Collins: Another dependable showing from a West Ham defender. The Welshman cleared everything that came his way and made some key blocks. (7/10)

Aaron Cresswell: Superb display from the full-back who got forward well down the left and whipped in some great crosses, including the delivery that set up Carroll's winner. (8/10)

Midfield

Mark Noble: Led by example with a composed performance in the centre of the midfield and battled well throughout the match until his late substitution in stoppage time. (7/10)

Cheikhou Kouyate: Dominant outing from the Senegal international, who was a powerhouse in the midfield. He made some important tackles and gave everything to the cause. (8/10)

Manuel Lanzini: Made a vital contribution in clearing a header from Zouma off the line and tracked back well in support of his defence. (7/10)

Attack

Dimitri Payet: Played a huge part in the opening goal with his corner falling for Zarate to score from. His delivery from set pieces were always a danger and he showed flashes of brilliance throughout the afternoon. (8/10)

Mauro Zarate: Gave the Hammers a wonderful start to the match with his well-taken goal and always looked good on the ball before he was replaced by Carroll. (8/10)

Diafra Sakho: Hard-working performance from the striker, who did not have any chances to get on the scoresheet, but was a constant menace for the Chelsea defence. (6/10)

Substitutes

Andy Carroll: Scored the winning goal for the Hammers with a fine header and was a constant threat in the air following his arrival. (7/10)

Pedro Obiang: Came on for the closing stages to try and shore up the midfield and stifle Chelsea's threat. (6/10)

Angelo Ogbonna: Brought on in stoppage time to help the Hammers defend a free kick. (6/10)

Goal

Asmir Begovic: Was left exposed by his defence for both goals that Chelsea conceded, but did look nervous at times. (6/10)

Defence

Kurt Zouma: Almost scored for the Blues with a header that was cleared off the line and made some important blocks as his side came under pressure in the second half. (6/10)

John Terry: Not the worst performance from the Chelsea captain, but gave the ball away cheaply in the build up to West Ham's second goal. (5/10)

Gary Cahill: Brought Chelsea back into the game with a fine finish, but was outjumped by Carroll for the winning goal. (6/10)

Cesar Azpilicueta: Failed to close down Zarate for the opening goal and looked vulnerable down his side of the pitch all afternoon. (5/10)

Midfield

Nemanja Matic: Ensured that his team had an uphill struggle to get back into the match after picking up two cheap yellow cards that saw him sent off just before half time. (3/10)

Cesc Fabregas: The Spaniard showed glimpses of his quality in the first half and had a controversial goal disallowed, before he was replaced at the break by Mikel. (6/10)

Ramires: Had a big chance to score for Chelsea moments before Carroll grabbed the winner for the Hammers, and was overrun in the midfield. (5/10)

Attack

Diego Costa: Fluffed a chance after latching onto a pass over the top from Fabregas in the early stages, but showed little threat or menace as the game wore on. (5/10)

Eden Hazard: Another poor outing for the Belgian, who has been struggling for form. He caused little problems for the West Ham defence and never looked like ending his long goal drought at club level. (4/10)

Willian: One of Chelsea's better performers at Upton Park. The Brazilian played a big part in the equaliser with his corner falling for Cahill to smash in, while he forced a good save from Adrian from a free kick in the first half. (6/10)

Substitutes

John Obi Mikel: Was brought on to replace Fabregas at the start of the second half and was composed on the ball whenever he was in possession. (6/10)

Baba Rahman: Had little chance to impress after coming on for the last three minutes. (6/10)
