Charlton Athletic boss Guy Luzon bemoans "harsh" penalty call after Palace defeat

Charlton Athletic manager Guy Luzon questions referee Neil Swarbrick's decision to award Crystal Palace's first penalty after the 4-1 League Cup defeat.

Charlton Athletic manager Guy Luzon has questioned some of referee Neil Swarbrick's decisions after his side lost 4-1 to local rivals Crystal Palace in the League Cup third round, bemoaning a "harsh" penalty decision which led to Palace's second goal.

The Eagles were awarded two spot kicks and Alou Diarra was sent off as the Addicks suffered defeat at Selhurst Park on Wednesday night to make it five games without a win for the Championship side.

Luzon praised his players after the game, but suggested that they did not get the rub of the green in a match where emotions were running high.

"We organised well in the first half, especially with a young team," he told reporters. "We have a lot of injuries and in our situation we had to use some young players. I wanted to pick my strongest team but I didn't have any choice.

"The first penalty was harsh and then after the second, at 3-1 with 10 players, it is finished. I don't know about the sending-off, I was too far away from the situation."

Charlton next face a trip to Cardiff City in the Championship on Saturday.
