Pep Guardiola backs Bayern Munich to progress after goalless draw

Pep Guardiola insists that Bayern Munich will claim the victory they need to knock out Shakhtar Donetsk following a goalless draw in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

Bayern Munich head coach Pep Guardiola has insisted that Bayern Munich will do enough to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League following their goalless draw with Shakhtar Donetsk.

Xabi Alonso was sent off in the second half of the stalemate in the first leg of the last-16 tie in Lviv, and despite admitting that the lack of chances his side created was disappointing, Guardiola is confident of knocking out the Ukrainian side.

"We played for a long time against an extra man, which made it difficult for us," the Spaniard told Sky. "We controlled the match but created few real chances.

"It is always better to score an away goal because now we have to win the second leg but I believe we will do that."

Bayern host Shakhtar in the second leg at the Allianz Arena on March 11.
