Yesterday evening Lionel Messi broke Gerd Mueller's 40-year record for goals in a calender year.

The Argentine's brace during Barcelona's 2-1 victory over Real Betis took his tally for 2012 to 86 goals, which surpassed Mueller's haul of 85 back in 1972.
