Luis Enrique: 'Lionel Messi to stay on penalty duty'

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique confirms that Lionel Messi will stay on penalty duty despite missing a potentially decisive one in the 2-1 win over Man City.

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has said that Lionel Messi will not be stripped of penalty duty after missing a potentially costly one in Tuesday's 2-1 Champions League win at Manchester City.

Messi saw his stoppage-time penalty saved by Joe Hart and missed a gilt-edged rebound as the Catalans spurned the chance to bring three away goals back to Camp Nou.

Asked if the Argentine would be relieved of spot-kick duties, Enrique told Sky Sports News: "No. We know penalties can be missed in this game of ours and he will take the next one.

"Tonight is a night to celebrate. All the first half was fantastic from every player, every person on the pitch. I can't complain about the attitude of the players."

Two first-half goals from Luis Suarez had given the visitors a commanding 2-0 half-time lead at the Etihad. Sergio Aguero reduced the arrears on 69 minutes, but a red card for Gael Clichy shortly after hindered City on the comeback trail.

The second leg will take place on March 18.
