Fernando Torres commits to Atletico Madrid by signing new contract

Atletico Madrid announce that Fernando Torres will remain at the club until the summer of 2018, putting end to talk of a possible switch to Mexican side Queretaro.

Fernando Torres has put an end to speculation over his future after agreeing to extend his stay at Atletico Madrid by at least another year.

The 33-year-old was out of contract in the Spanish capital this summer and recently tipped to move abroad, being linked with a lucrative move to Mexican side Queretaro.

Torres has turned down lofty wages to instead remain with Atletico for the new season, however, as the Rojiblancos - under a transfer ban until January that prohibits the registering of new players - prepare to move into their new 68,000-capacity Wanda Metropolitano home.

In a brief statement on Atletico's official website, the Spain international said: "I am very happy to continue one more year together."

Former Liverpool and Chelsea striker Torres has found the net 28 times since returning to Atleti in 2016, but now finds himself behind Kevin Gameiro and Antoine Greizmann in the pecking order.
