Arsenal's Arsene Wenger: 'We were never close to signing Sami Khedira'

Arsene Wenger insists that Arsenal were "never" close to signing Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has insisted that the club were never interested in signing Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira.

The Gunners were heavily linked with a move for the German World Cup winner, but reports claimed that the North London outfit were put off by the midfielder's wage demands.

Now, Wenger has rubbished suggestions that the two parties had agreed a fee in the region of £20m for Khedira, who has also been linked to Chelsea.

"I don't know who has put Khedira on the market - is it his agent or the press?" talkSPORT quotes Khedira as saying.

"We were never close to signing him. Jack Wilshere is back fit and in midfield we have offensive midfielders and quite a few box-to-box players."

Arsenal have acquired the signatures of Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers and David Ospina so far this summer.
