Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Mikel Arteta will captain Arsenal this season following the departure of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona.
The 32-year-old, who made the move to the Emirates Stadium from Everton in 2011, will now lead the Gunners with Per Mertesacker named as his deputy.
Arsenal opened up their season with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the Community Shield earlier today.
Speaking after the game, Wenger is quoted by Goal.com as saying: "One: Arteta and two: Mertesacker. Arteta will be captain and Mertesacker vice-captain."
Arteta has previously captained Everton during his six years at the club.
