West Ham United legend Sir Geoff Hurst wants the East Londoners to invest in "a bit of quality" and keep away from such players as Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere.

West Ham United legend Sir Geoff Hurst has urged the club to invest in "a bit of quality" and keep away from making a move for Jack Wilshere.

The 26-year-old's Arsenal contract is due to expire at the end of this month, and talks over an extension have so far failed to see the two parties reach an agreement.

Recent reports have suggested that Wilshere is on the verge of departing the Emirates Stadium after being told by new manager Unai Emery that he is likely to be a fringe player next season.

Hurst, whose hat-trick for England in the 1966 World Cup final saw the nation lift the Jules Rimet Trophy, believes that his countryman is too injury prone and that West Ham can do better than recruiting "cast-offs".

"Wilshere is injury prone and you don't want to sign players like that," Hurst - who is also wary of the prospect of signing Yaya Toure - told the Daily Star. "We've already got Andy Carroll.

"Wilshere for me is a complete no. There's enough players in the world. West Ham don't need to sign cast-offs, injured players and players that are too old.

"For God's sake, surely we have enough money to buy a bit of quality."

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Everton are also believed to be interested in Wilshere.
