Live Coverage: Commonwealth Games - July 30

Morning one and all - welcome to SM's live coverage of the Commonwealth Games! As ever we will be bringing you medal updates throughout the day, results from an array of sports - including the women's hockey which got underway a little earlier - and also exclusive interviews from our reporters based in Glasgow.

UPDATE! England have just taken the lead against hosts Scotland at the National Hockey Centre. Alex Danson flicked the ball home after some good work to give England one foot in the semi-final.

Some reaction from England's Scott Rider now, who finished in 10th place in the men's shot put final at Hampden Park earlier this week. The 36-year-old admits that he is "disappointed" with his display, which led to his third top 10 finish at the Commonwealth Games.

England's men's table tennis team lost in the final to Singapore yesterday for the second Commonwealth Games running, though Sam Walker believes that it will be third time lucky for his side in four years' time in Australia.

It was a special day for England yesterday in the artistic gymnastics teams events. The women followed the men in taking gold, and Hannah Whelan says that she takes great pride in winning the accolade. Read her comments in full by clicking here.

UPDATE! England currently lead Scotland 2-1 in the women's hockey at the National Hockey Centre. A draw will be enough to see England through, but the hosts need a win. Eleven minutes remaining.

Reports have emerged this morning of six-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt criticising the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Bolt's comments can be found here.

Following on from that last post, Usain Bolt has now taken to Twitter to deny making the comments.

The women's hockey may now be over - a full report from this morning's match between England and Scotland can be found here - but there's still plenty more to come today. The men's 200m heats are currently underway, and England's Danny Talbot has in the last few moments booked his place in tomorrow's semi-finals.

Team England duo James Ellington and Chris Clarke have joined Danny Talbot in the semi-finals of the men's 200m. Find out how they did it here.

Some reaction from this morning's women's hockey pool match between England and Scotland now. Alex Danson says that England will "prepare hard" for a potential meeting with New Zealand in the semi-finals, while head coach Danny Kerry claims that his side's Pool B victory is down to experience.

The 800m is following the men's 400m hurdles at Hampden Park, and while England's Richard Yates qualified for the final, it was disappointment for British record holder Dai Greene. The Welshman has been suffering with a series of injuries and could only finish fifth in his heat.

Greene has admitted that he is not fit enough to be able to compete near his best, and feels that he is likely to miss out on next month's European Championships because of his struggle for form.

Here is a roundup of what happened in the women's 800m a short while ago. England's Jenny Meadows and Jess Judd were impressive in qualifying for Thursday's semi-finals and they will be joined their by four other home nations runners. Canada's Melissa Bishop was the fastest in the heats.

More good qualifying news for England. Shara Proctor led teammates Jazmin Sawyers and Lorraine Ugen in qualifying for Thursday's women's long jump final with an effort of 6.51m, and, in the diving arena, another English trio - Jack Laugher, Chris Mears and Freddie Woodward - have earned the chance to compete for medals in the men's 1m springboard competition. God save the Queen...

MEDAL! It's silver for England in the first diving final of these Commonwealth Games, and it was so nearly gold for Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow, who were pipped to the post by Canada. England led going into the last round of dives, but had to settle for second, with one of the Malaysia pairs third.

Sports Mole's Barney Corkhill is at Hampden Park and caught up with Isobel Pooley following her qualification for the women's high jump final. She says she's the best she's ever been.

Usain Bolt is in attendance at the netball to watch Jamaica face New Zealand and he has told reporters that he thinks the Commonwealth Games are "awesome". Earlier reports claimed that the world's fastest man was not enjoying Glasgow and quoted him badmouthing the Games.

We brought you some words from England high jumper Isobel Pooley earlier and he is confirmation that she has qualified for Thursday's final. The three other home nations hopefuls missed out.

Let's get some reaction from our medal-winning divers, Tonia Couch and Sarah Barrow, who are happy with silver but do think it could have been gold if the judges had been more on their side.

An update from the Hydro, where several of England and Scotland's medalists from the team event are competing in the men's all-around competition. Max Whitlock is the favourite for the event and currently leads the way after two apparatus, with Daniel Keatings and Nile Wilson in hot pursuit.

Max Whitlock is still the man to beat in the men's all-around gymnastics. The Englishman is top after four apparatus with a score of 60.565, and it is still Daniel Keatings and Nile Wilson in second and third, on 58.766 and 57.766 respectively. The vault has come and gone and the parallel bars is next.

Our correspondent Barney Corkhill spoke to England's Christopher Clarke, who qualified from the men's 200m heats earlier. Clarke told SM that qualifying was all that mattered, having not won his heat.

Clarke, who goes in the semi-finals at Hampden Park on Thursday, said: "I attacked the bend because I wanted to come in a good position in the front 100. I tensed up a little bit. I just wanted to make sure I qualified. I think it's irrelevant [winning] in the heats but it's fine, I just did what I needed to."

With one discipline left - the unpredictable high bars - Whitlock still leads the men's all-around gymnastics final. He almost has the gold wrapped up, while Keatings and Wilson are competing for silver.

MEDAL UPDATE! Two more medals have been added to England's collection in the last 20 minutes or so thanks to fine displays from gymnasts Max Whitlock and Nile Wilson. The duo picked up gold and bronze respectively in the men's all-round, while silver went to Scotland's Daniel Keatings.

There's also good news for boxer Nicola Adams, who has kept alive her medal hopes having progressed to the last four of the women's flyweight. You can read Sian Cowper's report by clicking here.

There was joy for England earlier today in the badminton mixed doubles. Both teams progressed through to the last 16, and Chris Langridge has declared himself "happy" with his performance.

Sticking with England's mixed doubles team, and there's also been success in table tennis this afternoon as Sam Walker and Karina le Fevre battle back to see off India.

MEDAL UPDATE! Leon Rattigan vowed earlier today to 'give it his all' in tonight's bronze-medal final, and he's done just that! The British number one has overcome Soso Tamarau over Nigeria to win bronze in the last few moments.

England's women's team are looking gold for a squash gold right now, which would mean a second medal of the Games for Laura Massaro. The 23-year-old told reporters after her victory over Wales in the women's doubles earlier today that she is 'enjoying herself' on the caught.

GOLD FOR ENGLAND! Diver Jack Laugher has won a gold medal for England in the men's 1m springboard final. The 19-year-old produced five solid rounds to record the victory, with Australia taking silver and bronze. Read Shane Callaghan's report here.

MEDAL UPDATE! Purity Kirui win gold for Kenya in the women's 3000m steeplechase - full report to follow.

Before I pass over to Callum Mulvihill, there's time to bring you that 3000m steeplechase final result in full. Purity Kiruri led the way for Kenya as they took a clean sweep of medals; England's Eilish McColgan, meanwhile, finished in sixth place at Hampden Park. Over to you, Callum.

Thanks Dan. We've got some reaction from Jack Laugher, who admits that he is "ridiculously happy" after winning gold in the 1m springboard final earlier this evening.

GOLDS! Drama everywhere in Glasgow as England secure medals in three different events in the past few moments. Greg Rutherford's dominance has been obvious, and he has just secured gold in the long jump, while Jessica Taylor claimed bronze in the heptathlon a few seconds earlier. That's not all! England have won a second gold medal in the diving thanks to the efforts of Alicia Blagg and Rebecca Gallantree in the synchronised 3m springboard final.

Was it ever in doubt? Kirani James holds off the challenge of Wayde van Niekerk to secure gold in the 400m final, with Martyn Rooney being forced to settle for fourth. Grenada's James has now recorded victories at the Commonwealth Games, World Championships and the Olympics, and he's yet to turn 21.

Guy Learmonth of Scotland has managed to earn a spot in the 800m final thanks to a third-place finish in the first semi-final, which was won by Olympic champion David Rudisha. There was also success for Michael Rimmer, who qualified as a fastest loser.

England's Anthony Fowler is guaranteed at least a bronze medal following his win over Nickson Otieno Abaka earlier today, and the middleweight has told Sports Mole's Matt Law that he believes he is one of the best in the world.

Greg Rutherford was in great form as he secured gold in the long jump earlier this evening, but he has admitted to Sports Mole's Barney Corkhill that he was battling with nerves prior to beginning his successful bid for Commonwealth glory.

GOLD! There's some more brilliant news for fans of English gymnastics. Claudia Fragapane has taken the gold medal in the individual all-around final with a superb display, but that's not all. The 16-year-old will be joined on the podium by English teammates Ruby Harrold and Hannah Whelan, who clinched silver and bronze, respectively. A fine performance from England's women once again.

Andrew Osagie's disqualification from the 800m after the heats yesterday caused some controversy, but his Welsh rival, Joe Thomas, has told Sports Mole that the English runner did cross his line in the latter stages of the race.

Some big news breaking this evening from the Australian squad. Athletics Australia have suspended head coach Eric Hollingsworth after he issued a statement criticising 100m hurdler Sally Pearson for skipping a training camp ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

Denise Lewis is certain that critics of Greg Rutherford will be changing their opinions tonight following the English long jumper's gold at Hampden Park. The former Olympic heptathlon believes Rutherford has proved that his success in London two years ago was not a fluke.

Jessica Taylor could not hide her delight when speaking to Sports Mole shortly after claiming bronze in the heptathlon. You can read her interview with Barney Corkhill right now.

English weightlifter Ben Watson claimed a surprise bronze medal in the 105kg event earlier this evening, and was understandably overjoyed when asked about the achievement shortly after the medal ceremony. What a day for Team England!
