Hannah Whelan "really proud" to have won gold for England

Hannah Whelan says that she is "really proud" to have won gold for Team England in the women's artistic gymnastics event.

Hannah Whelan has reflected on her gold medal success at the Commonwealth Games with great pride.

The 22-year-old was part of a Team England side that won yesterday's women's artistic gymnastic event at the SSE Hydro, recording a score of 167.555 to edge out Australia.

Claudia Fragapane produced a strong floor routine to help secure victory for England just two months after the same group of gymnasts won silver for Great Britain at the 2014 Artistic European Championships.

"We did have a few shaky moments out there, but we have worked so hard," Whelan is quoted as saying by Western Daily Press.

"Coming off the back of a Europeans and going into a Worlds, we have done as much as we can do training-wise and we all felt ready.

"The way Claudia finished it off was fantastic. We have all pulled our weight and I'm really proud of the way everyone has performed."

There was also success for Team Wales in the women's artistic gymnastics after slip-ups from Canada and Australia saw them awarded a bronze medal.
