Team England gymnast Rebecca Downie has said that the women's artistic team is "feeling confident" after a strong opening day at the Commonwealth Games.
Downie, who won team silver at just 14 when she competed at the 2006 Games in Melbourne, registered the top score of the day on the uneven bars to help England take a one-and-a-half-point lead on Australia.
England competed before the Australians and scored a total of 85.390 on the vault and uneven bars, with the Aussies tallying a halfway score of 83.882 ahead of tomorrow's last two apparatus - floor and beam.
Speaking afterwards, Downie told reporters: "The team's feeling confident. We can't control what any of the other teams do. We can only go out there and do our jobs.
"Tomorrow there may be mistakes, there may not be. We're going to go out there and just enjoy it and give it our best shot."
Downie's teammate Claudia Fragapane is the youngest member of the English gymnastics team in Glasgow at 16. She told Sports Mole that it was an odd feeling to be performing at such a big event.
When asked what it was like to see herself up on the big screen, she said: "Yeah it was weird, I was like 'who's that?!'"
Australia have won team gold at the last four Commonwealths, with England getting the silver every time.
