The home side set out to give their opponents little space in the opening stages of the game, and nearly caught out goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in the first few minutes when Carlton Cole pressed down on goal.

In the ninth minute, a curling Christian Eriksen shot fell straight to Adrian, who gathered comfortably.

The midway stages of the first half proved largely uneventful, with the away side enjoying the lion's share of possession.

On the half-hour mark, however, there was drama as Kyle Naughton was adjudged to have deliberately blocked the ball with his hand in the Spurs box.

The 25-year-old was sent off, and Mark Noble stepped up to take the resulting penalty, but his effort from 12 yards flew wide.

Nevertheless, West Ham were able regain their composure and created another chance as Ricardo Vaz Te fired just wide following a dangerous cross.
