Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi makes yet more Champions League history by scoring in the competition for a 16th consecutive season.

Barcelona captain Lionel Messi broke another Champions League record when he opened the scoring during Tuesday night's 5-1 win against Ferencvaros.

The six-time Ballon d'Or winner set Barca on their way to a comfortable victory over their Hungarian visitors with a 27th-minute penalty which he himself won after being tripped in the box.

The goal saw Messi become the first player ever to score in 16 consecutive Champions League seasons, moving clear of Real Madrid's Karim Benzema and two above perennial rival Cristiano Ronaldo in the list.

However, Benzema could draw level with the Argentine again when Real Madrid open their campaign against Shakhtar Donetsk this evening.

Messi also draws level with Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs as the only player to have scored in 16 Champions League seasons overall.

The Barca talisman now has 117 goals in the competition, 13 behind Ronaldo in the all-time scoring ranks.
