Wayne Rooney acknowledges "incredible" Darren Fletcher

Wayne Rooney hails Darren Fletcher ahead of England's clash with Scotland, but won't hesitate to ensure that his club teammate ends up on the losing side.

England captain Wayne Rooney has paid tribute to Manchester United teammate and Scotland midfielder Darren Fletcher ahead of tonight's friendly at Celtic Park.

Fletcher has seen his career blighted by a battle with ulcerative colitis in recent years and Rooney had plenty of kind words for the "incredible" 30-year-old.

However, the Three Lions striker is more than happy to put that friendship on hold during what is expected to be a feisty clash in Glasgow this evening.

"It's incredible for him to be back playing and to be back in the Scotland team. It shows the character he is, the type of person he is," he told reporters.

"Obviously it was a hard moment for Darren and his family and he's come though that with flying colours.

"Obviously, we speak about the game and he's playing for Scotland and I'm playing for England. We're great friends off the pitch, but for 90 minutes we're opponents."

Rooney is expected to win his 101st cap for England after earning centurion status and scoring in Saturday's 3-1 win over Slovenia.
