How Manchester City could line up against Atalanta

Sports Mole looks at how Manchester City could line up for Wednesday's Champions League clash with Atalanta.

Manchester City travel to Italy to face Atalanta in the Champions League off the back of a 2-1 win over Southampton in their last game.

The victory takes them to five wins on the bounce in all competitions following their shock 2-0 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Atalanta's form is rather mixed at present, with just one win in their last five games across all competitions. However, that win did come by a staggering 7-1 scoreline against Udinese.

The Serie A side have met Manchester City recently at the Etihad Stadium and were on the wrong end of a 5-1 humbling by the reigning Premier League champions, with Raheem Sterling grabbing a hat-trick.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how City could line up for Wednesday's showdown.

Pep Guardiola has a handful of selection issues ahead of this one, but the identity of his starting goalkeeper is not in question. Ederson is the undisputed first choice between the sticks and will almost certainly retain his place in Italy.

Given Guardiola's penchant for rotation, the rest of the team is susceptible to change, but it seems unlikely that he will drop natural centre-back John Stones from the side now that he is back to full fitness. Nicolas Otamendi could come in to partner him, however, freeing Fernandinho up to return to his more natural midfield role given the lack of options there at present.

Kyle Walker scored and assisted against Southampton and would feel aggrieved if he were to be dropped, while Angelino should also retain his place due to the fitness struggles of Zinchenko and Benjamin Mendy.

If Fernandinho does indeed return to his natural defensive midfield berth, Ilkay Gundogan could be freed from the holding role to play alongside Kevin De Bruyne as a more creative presence.

As for the front three, Sterling's hat-trick and Sergio Aguero's brace when these two teams last met should be enough to see them retain their places in the side, while Bernardo Silva could be given the nod ahead of Riyad Mahrez on the right wing.
