Brendan Rodgers hails Liverpool's character

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers hails his side's "resilience" after surviving a first-half onslaught from Burnley to hold out and pick up all three points.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has hailed his side's character after their "resilient" performance against Burnley.

Burnley had the better first half, as Danny Ings came close to opening the scoring by hitting the woodwork.

Raheem Sterling broke the deadlock in the second half and scored the game's only goal, leaving Rodgers to compliment his side's work rate and resilience as the Reds move up to ninth in the table.

"I thought in terms of our character and resilience in the game we showed outstanding qualities when needed," the 41-year-old told reporters.

"They pressed really hard and made it difficult in the first half but I felt we were better second half.

"I was really pleased because we had to show a different side to us. It's a great three points and I'm delighted with that."

The victory was Liverpool's first in four games, leaving them 20 points behind league leaders Chelsea and seven points off of fourth-placed Southampton.
