Carragher: 'Suarez has to think of his career'

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher says that Luis Suarez must do what he thinks is best for his career.

Jamie Carragher has said that Luis Suarez should not be expected to stay at Liverpool because of loyalty to the club.

The Uruguayan, who has been involved in a few controversial incidents since moving from Ajax, has made clear his desire to leave Anfield, claiming that he has been harangued by the media during his time in English football.

Carragher said that the Reds were right to support Suarez during difficult moments, but added that he should do what he thinks is best for his career.

"Luis Suarez can't stay at Liverpool forever just because they've supported him in certain situations," Carragher told Sky Sports News. "Liverpool were right to support him because he's their player but if he wasn't a very good player and wasn't producing on the pitch then Liverpool would sell him. Are they being loyal to a player if they sell him?

"I think loyalty in football, from both sides, is overplayed a bit. Basically Liverpool are loyal to Luis Suarez because he's such a good player and Luis has got to think of his own career and what he wants to achieve.

"Liverpool were always going to be in this situation. Luis Suarez is playing for a team that's seventh in the Premier League and he's one of the best players in world football, so it would be pretty naive of us to feel that no club would be showing any interest in him."

Liverpool are said to value the 26-year-old at £50m.
