Everton boss Sam Allardyce impressed by Jordan Pickford's England performance

Everton boss Sam Allardyce says that goalkeeper Jordan Pickford gave England boss Gareth Southgate "a lot to think about" with his performance against the Netherlands.

Everton boss Sam Allardyce has suggested that Jordan Pickford should not be judged on the number of goals that he concedes for the Toffees.

During his first campaign at Goodison Park, Pickford has let in 50 goals in 31 matches in the Premier League, and the Merseyside club possess the fifth-worst defensive record in the top flight.

However, Pickford appears to be favourite to be England's number one at the World Cup, and Allardyce says that the 24-year-old was able to show his qualities in the 1-0 victory over Netherlands last Friday.

At a press conference, the 63-year-old told reporters: "He's given Gareth a lot to think about with his performance the other night. I know people have gone on about him conceding goals for Everton this season but you look at the sort of saves he makes.

"He's been extremely busy - far too busy on some occasions - and we've managed to quell that lately. We've reduced our goals conceded since I've been here and that helps the goalkeeper. He's always there when needed."

Pickford is expected to feature when Everton host Manchester City on Saturday evening.
