Italy vs. England head-to-head record

Sports Mole looks at the head-to-head record between Italy and England ahead of Sunday's Euro 2020 final.

Italy and England will lock horns for the 28th time on Sunday, with the two teams battling for the European Championship trophy.

England topped Group D with seven points before beating Germany, Ukraine and Denmark in the knockout rounds to advance to the showpiece event at Wembley.

Italy, meanwhile, finished at the top of Group A with nine points before overcoming Austria, Belgium and Spain to book their spot in the Euro 2020 final.

England will have home advantage, but Italy have not lost a single match at international level since September 2018, and Roberto Mancini's side will be confident of upsetting the Three Lions on Sunday evening.

Here, Sports Mole takes a closer look at the overall head-to-head record between the two sides ahead of the final.

Italy lead the head-to-head record between the two sides with 11 victories to England's eight, while there have also been eight draws throughout history.

The first ever contest took place back in 1933, with the two sides playing out a 1-1 draw, and each of the first 10 fixtures were actually friendlies, before Don Revie's England beat Italy 3-2 in the 1976 Bicenennial Cup.

The first official competitive fixture between the two nations was a World Cup qualifier in November 1976, with Italy running out 2-0 winners, but the Three Lions got their revenge in the reverse match, recording a 2-0 victory courtesy of a strong performance from a certain Kevin Keegan; the success was not enough to lead England to the World Cup, though, with Italy keeping top spot due to goal difference.

Sir Bobby Robson's final match as England manager came against Italy in the third-placed playoff at the 1990 World Cup, which ended with the Azzurri running out 2-1 winners courtesy of goals from Roberto Baggio and Toto Schillaci.

England famously booked their spot in the finals of the 1998 World Cup courtesy of a goalless draw against Italy in October 1997, with Paul Ince left in a blood-soaked shirt and head bandage following a brutal clash between the two nations.

The Three Lions suffered penalty heartbreak against Italy at Euro 2012, losing on spot kicks at the quarter-final stage following a goalless draw.

The two sides again locked horns at the 2014 World Cup, with Mario Balotelli scoring a famous winner for the Italians, and it turned out to be a tournament to forget for England, who finished bottom of the section with just one point to show from their three matches with Italy, Uruguay and Costa Rica.

The 2-1 England loss in June 2014 was the last competitive fixture between the two sides, but they have locked horns on two occasions since then, playing out 1-1 draws in friendlies in March 2015 and March 2018 respectively.
